Restorative potential of green spaces in noise-polluted environments (RESTORE)
Project description
Urban areas experience a continuous increase of population and mobility going along with increased noise exposure of the residents and a decline of green spaces. The objective of this project is to assess the effects of green spaces as facilitators and noise as impediment to recover from stress in Switzerland. The project will combine laboratory acoustic and visual experiments, field experiments, remote sensing assessments and a Swiss-wide PPGIS survey. This interdisciplinary approach will result from the cooperation of the Swiss Federal Laboratory for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). The results will have an impact on the Swiss noise legislation and the implementation of the spatial planning act.

Objectives:The objective is to identify the perceived restorative potential of green spaces according to their spatial (extent, accessibility), acoustic and visual characteristics. A Swiss-wide PPGIS survey will be conducted in combination with remote sensing assessment of green areas to determine the subjectively perceived restorative potential compared to the physical characteristics of green spaces in the urban and suburban regions of Switzerland.
